They’ve done it again!
Classical captured a total of 10 gold medals, en route to successfully defending its crown at the R.I. Interscholastic League Girls Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Saturday afternoon at Brown Stadium.
Amassing 130 points, the Purple steadily built upon their lead throughout the day, finishing well ahead of runner-up La Salle (68 points), Smithfield (55), Hope (52), North Kingstown (47) and the rest of the field at Saturday’s meet, presented by the Bill Falk Fund of the R.I. Track & Field Foundation.
Maddy Berkson provided some of the biggest contributions. The Stanford-bound senior first successfully defended her title in the 1,500, lowering her own state and meet records with a time of 4:26.88. It is also the fourth-fastest time in the U.S. this season.
She also won the 800-meter dash in 2:12.32 and anchored Classical’s winning 4×400-meter relay, combining with Alicia Holloway, Mary Stern and Elizabeth Akindolie to clock a time of meetecord 3:53.91.
Alva Hicks was a double-winner, once again winning the discus with a meetecord throw of 143-07 and also taking first in the shot put with a distance of 41-6. The junior also placed second in the hammer with a heave of 169-04.
Meanwhile, Holloway took first in both the 100-meter hurdles (15.06) and the 300-meter hurdles (44.93)
