Why do so many people, both Rhode Islanders and out-of-staters think the shape that welcomes us to Federal Hill in Providence is a Pineapple?
It’s an easy mistake to make because, well, at first glance it looks like an acorn.
However, true Rhode Islander’s know the real story – and for those of us who didn’t, here it is:
(Wikipedia) The gateway arch over Atwells Avenue near Downtown is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Providence. The La Pigna (or The Pine Cone) sculpture hanging from its center — a traditional Italian symbol of welcome, abundance, and quality — is often mistakenly referred to as “The Pineapple” and has become the symbol of Federal Hill.
Italian culture was (and is) a very prominent part of Federal Hill, so the La Pigna is a fitting welcome for visitors.
